Perennial herb; roots thick, fibrous; shoots prostrate to decumbent, sometimes rooting at the nodes and often forming mats, or ascending or straggling, usually much branched, with a line of pubescence or glabrous, often tinged with red. Leaves distichous; sheaths to 3 cm long, surface with a line of uniseriate hairs along the fused edge or pilose all over, apex white-ciliate; lamina sessile or rarely petiolate, linear-lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, 0.1-15 x 0.7-3.4 cm, base cuneate to rounded or cordate, margins scabrid distally, often ciliate basally, apex obtuse to acuminate; surfaces glabrous to pilose. Spathes solitary, usually slightly falcate, less commonly not falcate or strongly falcate, the spathe halves sometimes spreading at anthesis; peduncles 0.8-4 cm long; spathes rarely violet, (0.8-) 1-6 x (0.3-) 0.5-1.7 cm, base rounded to cordate, margins free, often ciliate proximally, usually scabrid distally,
apex acute to acuminate, outer surface glabrous to densely pilose or puberulous; upper cincinnus sometimes well developed and producing l(-2) male flower(s), sometimes lacking or vestigial, lower cincinnus (l-)2-8-flowered; bracteoles present. Flowers bisexual and male, usually 8-10 mm wide (sometimes wider). Sepals ovate, 2-3.5 x 1.2-2 mm, glabrous or sparsely pilose, paired sepals fused at the base, shallowly cup-shaped; paired petals erect or lateral, yellow or occasionally orange or orange-yellow, rarely creamy white, broadly ovate to broadly ovate-reniform, 5-5.5(-8) x 5-5.5 mm of which the claw 2-2.5(-3) mm long; medial petal cupshaped or flat, usually not clawed, ovate, 2.5-4 x 1.5-2 mm, concolorous with the paired petals or a little paler; staminodes 2 or 3, the medial fully developed or lacking; stamen filaments fused proximally, 4-7 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.4 mm long; medial stamen filament 3.2-5 mm long, l.l-1.8 mm long. Ovary l-1.5 mm long; style 4-7 mm long; stigma capitate. Capsule light or dark brown, with or without darker brown spots or reddish brown mottling, trilocular, bivalved, ( 1-) 3-seeded, the basal ventral ovules (and sometimes the apical ventral ovules) aborting, oblong-ellipsoid to oblong, 4.5-6.5(-6.8) x 2-4 mm, rostrate or not rostrate. Dorsal locule seed fused to the capsule wall, elongate-hemispheric, sometimes slightly dorsiventrally compressed, 2.6-4.4 x l. 7-2.5 mm, testa dark brown, usually smooth (to alveolate); ventral locule seeds broadly ovoid to oblong-rectangular, dorsiventrally compressed, 1.9-2.8 x 1.2-1.8 mm, testa foveolate to foveolate-reticulate or alveolate, dark brown.
